Once upon a time… there was an Island called California inhabited by Amazonians, black women wearing on their bodies only pearls and gold… that’s what a Spanish writer says in a novel and particularly the reason that motivated Hernan Cortez to started making their first explorations to the Baja.
Located on the East Cape of the Baja Peninsula, La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur. T
he Baja is situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Typically the Pacific coast has rougher beaches and potentially dangerous rip tides, while the Sea of Corez is protected, providing beautiful beach sanctuaries and waters rich with aquatic life. La Paz is located on the Sea of Cortez side of the Baja (the East Cape) inside two bays - a very large bay, and then a smaller inlet. The beautiful and historic city is located along a boardwalk with almost 6 miles long locally known as "Malecón", and is surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches.
Baja settlement dates back 12,000 years however few facts are known of those early inhabitants. Aside from indigenous semi-nomadic tribes, La Paz was first discovered by Hernan Cortes in 1533. Due to arid land and poor cultivation, the area was eventually abandoned until 1596 when Sebastian Vizcaino re-discovered the area and dubbed the Bay "La Paz" establishing a permanent camp. These early Spaniards discovered pearls and thus built their trade helping to grow the area. In those days, pearls were exploited close to extinction. In the 1700s several missions and a territory established in La Paz. The area did not receive status as a state until 1974 and is now a bustling seaside town that has much to offer visitors and permanent inhabitants.
