La Paz, One of the Best Places in the World to Retire
In 2003, Money Magazine named La Paz one of the 10 Best Places in the World to retire. The criteria sought out:
- A wide range of available activities
- High-quality medical care
- Reasonable taxes and housing costs
- Easy access to an airport
- State financial stability
Although this article is somewhat dated, La Paz has only gotten more attractive since 2003. The article calls attention to the obvious attractions of La Paz and even some not so obvious. This gorgeous Mexican seaside village is located on the East Cape of the Baja just a few hours north of the International airport at San Jose Del Cabo. La Paz is known for incredible sunsets, white sand beaches, sailing, fishing, diving, snorkeling and more. Although Mexican culture predominates, La Paz offers much for the retiring expat.
Real estate in this budding, yet historic community is still reasonable compared to sun-filled US cities providing similar opportunities and amenities. The potential to "stretch" your retirement dollar is enticing. There are communities to fit everyone’s interests - from high-end luxury, gated communities to marina communities revolving around sailing, fishing and ocean cruising. The local restaurants are sublime and strolling along the Malecon (boardwalk) at sunset is a real treat. Miles of beaches offer plenty of aquatic activities. Mother nature adds to the excitement with a visit from the whales in February and the dolphins in summer.
So how easy is it to obtain Mexican property for an American? There are some legal challenges that you need to be aware of but there are no serious roadblocks like many may think. The key is finding a realtor or lawyer that is well versed in Mexican real estate law who can help you set up a trust. The right person can make your transaction very simple.
Alfredo Cristo is a Broker/Owner at RE/MAX Del Mar (three Baja locations) and a seasoned real estate attorney (who also has Wisconsin roots). His experience in both realms makes him an invaluable asset in these types of transactions. Please contact Alfredo for more information about how you can obtain your dream Mexican getaway in La Paz or any of the Baja East Cape towns.
