Loreto Mexico: An area rich with history and natural beauty
Loreto Mexico is located approximately 400 km North of the tip of the Baja Peninsula between the Sea of Cortez and the Sierra de la Giganta Mountains. The stunning and diverse terrain is like no other in the Baja. There is much biological diversity and varied geological points of interest. The Sea of Cortez coastline at Loreto is home to reefs, mountains, caverns, bays, islands and coves. This natural paradise has been protected as a National Maritime Park since 2000 and is home to many aquatic wonders such as: starfish, sea urchins, killer whales, fan coral, mother-of-pearl, blue whales, dolphins and sea lions.
Loreto was once the capital of a large territory including California and Texas. Discovered in 1533, it was originally made famous by the search for pearls yet most expeditions to the area failed. The first permanent settlement was formed in 1697 and served as the capital of the territory until 1829 when the city was destroyed by an earthquake. Today Loreto has developed into a charming and historic locale boasting modern conveniences such as an international airport and a trans-peninsular highway. The desert climate is typical of the baja, with dry heat complimenting cool Sea of Cortez breezes.
Rich with activities and natural wonders, there is something for everyone in Loreto - beautiful white sand beaches, camping, ecotourism, sport fishing, golf, sailing, snorkeling, diving - the list is endless! Come find your own private paradise in Loreto.
