Since a Presidential Decree in 1996, the fragile marine eco-system of Loreto Bay has been protected.  Covering 2,065 square kilometers, the Bahia de Loreto Marine Park is home to over 800 species of marine life.  In 2005, this incredible feat of nature was inscribed to the United Nation’s list of protected World Heritage Sites.  Just like Loreto itself, this is a pretty special place.

The park is in the care of the Grupo Ecologista Antares, a non-profit organization committed to addressing environmental issues in the Loreto region.  The GEA hopes to protect the fishery populations and marine diversity in the Bay of Loreto.  They monitor fishing activity and enforce protective regulations within the park.  With such a vast area to patrol, this is a large task.  Recently they have been working with the Loreto National Marine Park to ensure the protection of two endangered species - the whales and the sea turtles.  They have worked with the Sea Turtle Conservation Network over the years to help out in this national effort.

The Marine Park is a wonderful place to enjoy the natural beauty of Loreto - sea kayaking, snorkeling, diving and more.  Just be certain to respect and protect this beautiful environment that so many call home.
