US - Mexico Celebrate 25 Years of Environmental Cooperation

Recently officials from the US and Mexico met to discuss environmental issues faced by both countries near the border and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the La Paz Agreement.  The meeting was attended by the Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales as well as the US EPA, county and local governments, representatives from US tribes, Mexico indigenous communities and several representatives from non-governmental organizations.  The US EPA has worked with Mexico to improve environmental issues faced by both borders which has lead to significant improvement in the environmental quality of life for people in the region.  The initiative, dubbed Border 2012, in conjunction with the La Paz Agreement aims to help:

  • reduce air pollution
  • provide safe drinking water
  • hazardous waste cleanup
  • general environmental cleanup and pollution prevention
  • improve emergency preparedness

The La Paz Agreement was signed in 1983 between the US and Mexico to protect, conserve and improve the environment of the border region.  This paved the way for the creation of a framework both governments can rely on to resolve environmental issues along the border.  Since its start the La Paz Agreement has lead to many successful border initiatives.
