Fly Fishing in Los Barriles, Mexico

August 6th, 2008 Alfredo Cristo Posted in Los Barriles, Sport Fishing No Comments »

Just 45 minutes Northwest from the International Airport, you’ll find the heart of the East Cape - Los Barriles and Buena Vista.  Offering 10 miles of accessible beaches and a deep marine drop-off (referred to as the 100 foot fathom) just a few miles offshore, this area is home to some of the Baja’s best fly fishing.  The beaches are peppered with quite a few rocky points which are home to many types of marine life including lots of gamefish.  You can easily take a panga boat to fish the in shore waters where the rock reefs extend from the beach - a stunning natural sanctuary.  Or - use a float tube or pontoon to access the anchoring buoys placed by local hotels.  The buoys attract bait fish in turn bringing the larger fish in to feed.

Further out, shark buoys also attract baitfish - since the waters are much deeper, you’ll also find durado, tuna and skipjack in these areas.  Beyond the buoys, the serene blue waters provide a deep santuary for the billfish feeding on squid, mackerel and flying fish.  Here’s a quick guide for the depths:

Within 20′ of shore: roosterfish, jacks, ladyfish, cabrilla, pompano, sierra, triggerfish, giant needlefish, pargo, ladyfish, cornetfish

Inshore:  needlefish, pompano, triggerfish, jacks, bonitas, dorado, roosterfish, sierra

Offshore: marlin, dorado, sailfish, wahoo and tuna

Los Barriles offers beautiful white sandy beaches and some of the best sport fishing in the world - come see what it’s all about!

Los Barriles Welcomes New Wine Bar - The Loft

July 6th, 2008 admin Posted in Los Barriles No Comments »

The sleepy seaside village of Los Barriles just picked up a little with a new option for entertainment.  Wine connoisseurs will appreciate this new bar located in the downtown Hotel Palmas de Cortes.  It’s located just above the regular indoor fisherman’s bar where the hotel accounting office used to be - just ask at reception.  The Loft serves wine and champagne from Argentina, Chile, Italy, France, California and the Baja.  There is even a private reserve hailing from the Valle de Guadalupe bearing the hotels name - Palmas de Cortes.  The bar also sells cigars - Cohiba, Monte Cristo, Romeo and Juliet and Partagas.

The bar seats 22 comfortably and offers nightly entertainment by local artist, Sergio Cuellar - playing guitar and singing.  He’ll treat you to popular and original music that complements his skillful guitar playing.

This month’s feature bottles include a Baron Balche red and a top-notch Pinot Grigio Veneto white.  Hours of business are 5-9 Tuesday through Sunday with reservations accepted for the Friday wine tasting.  The space is also available for private parties and business meetings.  Come on in and check out the new digs!
