Did you know that La Paz is surrounded by not only beautiful white sand beaches and calm blue sea waters but also mountains? Hiking, mountain biking and camping opportunities in and around the area are endless! The local beaches provide an excellent backdrop for camping with those near the city offering more services. Some beaches such as Punta Coyote and San Evaristo are more remote but provide access to pristine areas less known to the public.
The surrounding desert is also full of wonders and is a great place to do all of these activities. However, due to high temperatures, this is typically a winter or fall excursion.
If you are up for a mountain adventure, the Sierra de la Laguna is a great place to explore. Just 19 miles south of Todos Santos, you’ll find easy entry to this marvel of nature. Looming to about 6,700 feet - this trek can take some time and planning. The area is also a Biosphere Reserve meaning you can’t ascend without advising the authorities first. Climbing the Sierra will take you through some fairly drastic landscape changes - from desert - to low forest - to conifers and a cool climate in the higher altitudes. The path can be steep at times and may take as long as 18 hours to summit. The trail offers several rest and camping areas along the way however. The Sierra is also accessible via Santiago and Miraflores.
So on your next trip to the tip of the Baja go on an adventure - bring your bike and a tent!
